Bone Broth Hot Chocolate Recipe

Last week we did a Facebook Live class all about bone broth. We made bone broth, talked about its health benefits and how to incorporate it into our eating habits. One of those ways to consume bone broth, other than a basic soup base, is bone broth hot chocolate. We made bone broth hot chocolate on Facebook to go through the recipe, but it is too good to not post in a permanent place, so we wanted to get it here, on the blog too. If you would like to watch the video all about bone broth, go ahead and click here to head to the Facebook live.

The best thing about this recipe, is that it is a great way to hydrate ourselves without just chugging more water. Don’t get me wrong water is important, but hydration itself is more important than that. True hydration, and wellness, comes from nutrients… like minerals and vitamins… and this recipe is packed with those great nutritional benefits. You will notice that this recipe can be kind of fluid and adapted different ways by all my notes in the ingredient list, and also that real ingredients matter but most of the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen.

Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (the more basic, the better. No onion flavored broth here. Also, feel free to start out with 1/4 cup and work your way up)

  • 1 cup milk (can also use a mixture of milk and heavy cream to reach the total 1 cup)

  • 2-3 TBS maple syrup (honey also works, but the flavor of maple syrup makes this recipe more decadent)

  • 1/2 TBS cacao powder (different than cocoa powder, as it is higher in minerals and vitamins due to lower temp processing)

  • Splash of real vanilla extract (just skip imitation vanilla, we want to add nutrition with this recipe and not feed our body toxins)

  • Just a tiny pinch of sea salt (if you want to make sure you are getting plenty of minerals, Real Salt brand is the way to go)

Process:

  • Gather and measure out your ingredients so that you can just dump into the pot as you heat your hot chocolate.

  • Slowly heat your broth and milk/cream on the stove in a small pot. Be sure to stir it often to prevent scalding on the bottom of your pan.

  • Add in your maple syrup, cacao powder, vanilla and salt.

  • Once it is hot enough to your liking, pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!

Let us know if you try out this recipe and what you think! It is such a rich, decadent hot chocolate that one small cup will be the perfect snack or post supper dessert.
