What is Chiropractic?

The word chiropractic means “done by hand".

What is chiropractic with Dr Erica Barela of Lincoln and Plymouth Nebraska

Chiropractic is a form of treatment for the body that detects and reduces misalignments of the spine, called vertebral subluxation, that interfere with our central nervous system. Focusing on the neuromusculoskeletal system such as: the bones, nerves, ligaments, tendons and muscles, chiropractors can improve their patients’ health via manual manipulation of the spine without the use of prescription drugs.

According to the Association of Chiropractic colleges, chiropractic is": “a healthcare discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, doctors of chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.”

Chiropractic adjustments help our body by lining things back in their proper positions. This also reduced stress on the body as a whole, which in turns frees up the body’s energy to maintain homeostasis and lets the immune system operate optimally.

This form of treatment is built upon the principle that the body has the innate ability to heal itself. When the spine and nervous system is balanced and not under stress, your body is able to function at a higher level. This is the sweet spot to where healing happens.

Every cell and organ in our body is controlled by the nervous system. Due to this, proper chiropractic care will focus on proper spinal alignment so that the nervous system is not stressed due to vertebral subluxation, or compression on spinal joints and nerves.
