Hydration 101

Up to 60% of your body is water.

According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%.

10 ways water helps our body:

1. Forms saliva for digestion

2. Keeps mucus membranes moist

3. Allows cells to grow, reproduce and survive

4. Flushes body waste (urine)
5. Supports the lymphatic system and circulatory system

6. Lubricates joints

7. Needed by the brain to make hormones and neurotransmitters

8. Regulates body temperature
9. Is a shock absorber for the brain and spinal cord
10. Helps deliver oxygen all over the body.

An adequate goal: consume for 1/2 our body weight in ounces of water throughout the day.

An easy way to achieve this goal is to carry water with you so it's readily available. Also, set timers in your phone for every hour or so to drink up!
